Heated toilet seats and porn on the subway

I’m in Japan. As you probably already know, I have to leave the United States every six months because I am on a visitors visa.

For many reasons I went to Tokyo and wow! It’s a crazy city. Here are some of my first observations and encounters with Japanese culture:

They are really nicely dressed.
Naturally I stand out in Japan. I’m not tall, but in Asia I’m a giant. Especially when I travel with a big backpack, big curly hair and leather boots. All that to say – I felt a little underdressed when I got on the subway.

They are very polite and helpful.
Bowing became a little hard with a big backpack – I might have hit a few people. I found my way through the many trains and subways late at night in Tokyo because of all the nice people that so eagerly wanted to help me. Every time I said farewell to another helper they would bow and I would bow back – risking someones life.

Everything is small.
One lady came into the train with her pack of chips. Her face was like a kid who have just been given a treat – smiling contently. In her hand she had the smallest little pack of chips I have ever seen. Literally the chips were the size of my thumbnail.

Porn on the subway.
I don’t want you to think that everyone does that – but yes I totally stood next to a guy who was watching adult movies. I mentioned it to one of the YWAM’ers here and she told me it’s not uncommon. Sadly the sex industry is large here in Tokyo.

Heated toilet seats.
It’s winter here right now and it is cold. There is almost nothing that beats a heated toilet seat in the cold mornings. The Japanese got that one right for sure.

Anyways – I appreciate all the prayers. Please keep my team in prayers too as they are holding down the fort while I’m here.
